Francks
Francois Deceus continues to emerge as one of the important young painters
of his generation. He has devoted his career to creating deeply expressive
bodies of work that pay tribute to the quiet courage of “everyday
people”, and that express deeply felt social concerns. His work
incorporates many of the influences and aesthetic forms of the 40’s
and 50’s visual artists like William Johnson and Jacob Lawrence,
as well as some of the artistic traditions of his native Haiti. His modernist
style relies heavily on a simplification of forms, sharp angles, bold
color contrasts, distortion of perspectives, and the use of surface tension
with the use of overlaying material and raised written messages. He frequently
uses the symbolism of hands and flowers in his paintings to represent
hard work and strength, and to pay tribute to those who came before him. |
