I am intrigued by the portrait, the figure and the way
society influences our construction of "self". I like
to play with self-image, exploring personas people
create and reflecting on how the subconscious shows
on the surface. Through the use of different materials,
I construct different "masks", to explore the revealing
and concealing nature of our identities. In our multi-
media culture there are multiple levels to an
individual's identity, rather than one specific
persona or self. This helps me better understand
myself. I find materials at flea markets to work with:
string, beads, throw-off objects and photos.I try to
create something from things people no longer want;
to reenliven them. Combining the technology of photos
with hand-worked details, I think about the different
perceptions of crafts and "art" and try to join them.
I see the need to interpret artwork; but first and
foremost this is my unbridled freedom to explore
and enjoy outside of life's everyday demands.
