I am fascinated by the duality of celebrities. Everyone knows them,
but few will come in contact with them. They are fictional characters
in addition to being real people walking around in the world. Recently
I’ve been working on a series of paper dolls portraying current
movie stars. The women are removed from their original magazine or
tabloid settings, carefully traced and put back together with pieces
of colored paper, their facial features removed. The work in this
show ‘documents’ a difficult time in a movie star’s
life. I have taken images from Winona Ryder’s shoplifting trial
and recreated them with paper cut-outs. I am interested in the way
the details of a star’s personal life come to represent our
own experiences. They have troubles, just like us. Perhaps we are
not that different? Magazines and media encourage us to identify with
celebrities. We are able to trace the events of their lives and compare
them to our own. I am curious as to what happens when a fan takes
this information way too seriously. The strange sort of intimacy that
develops as a result of the “touch the celebrity” tease
of the media interests me. |
