DO YOU BELIEVE? is a series of photo-based gouache paintings depicting
rocketeers posing with their hand-built creations. Rocketry is a thriving
subculture in the United States, buoyed by the same enthusiasm and
drive that propel NASA's space exploration projects. A spirit of playful
experimentation combined with tense competitiveness infuses the rocket
launch competitions held regularly across the country. In our current
cultural climate of heightened patriotism, this series recalls issues
of American identity, personal displays of power, and the internalization
of governmental politics. |
